How we live the Internet globally, at DIDS 2016

This year sees the seventh Internet conference, DIDS 2016, held 15th and 16th March, at the Hyatt Regency Belgrade hotel, under the slogan  Living the Internet... Globally ‑ Securely ‑ Locally, organised by the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry Foundation (RNIDS). The first block of the DIDS 2016 Internet conference will, as tradition dictates, be dedicated to current events in the Internet industry at the global level, trying to answer questions relating to the running of the global Internet ‑ “who, what, when, where and why”. “High politics” directly impacts trends and precedents in the way we live and work on the Internet globally: from the nature of global regulation, to the rights and obligations of companies, to acceptable practices of security services in regard to surveillance ‑ and the rights (and obligations) of users. Do we, as ordinary users, even have any influence on the creation of the policies that decide on the future of the Internet, and what are the global, regional and national mechanisms of our influence? DIDS 2016 will be opened by Gabriella Schittek, ICANN Global Stakeholder Engagement Manager CEE; ICANN as an organisation is supporting this year’s event, too. Danko Jevtović, the Director, and Vojislav Rodić, Chair of the RNIDS Board of Governors, will be giving words of...

Cyrbusters panel debate held: busting myths about Cyrillic on the Internet

A number of myths about the use of Cyrillic on the Internet ‑ for example that Google “doesn't like” our official script, that there are not enough Cyrillic fonts, that using Cyrillic makes it difficult to expand one’s online business and other beliefs ‑ were put to rest on 27th January 2016 at a panel debate entitled: Cyribusters, held at the Startit Center and organized by the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS).    Google doesn’t like Cyrillic At the panel discussion led by multimedia creator Uroš Bogdanović, Ivan Rečević, a trainer at the Google Academy, debunked this first myth. According to him, in our area Google gives priority to searches in the Cyrillic script, but the content has to be adequately described in order for Google to know which language and script is being used, of which, in practice, there isn’t enough of. Specifically, the code of a web page should define the language in which it is written, whether it is Cyrillic or Serbian Latin (letters with diacritical marks), which the majority of Serbian sites do not do.  "Google is a piece of large and complex machinery. Everyone who can help that machinery to understand and to locate content will be rewarded with a better search position. This...
