.СРБ domain registration begins

At the December 13th Assembly, the Board of Governors, reached a decision on starting .СРБ domain registration, determining St Sava’s Day, January 27th 2012, as the commencement date. The Cyrillic Internet domain .СРБ is a new, second ccTLD of the Republic of Serbia and, after the Russian .RF, the second world’s Internet domain in Cyrillic eligible for registration. Our .СРБ domain is a part of the family of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), i.e. domains whose names are not written in the English alphabet. The world’s biggest countries and nations ‑ Russia and China, along with many Arab and Far East countries ‑ already have the IDN in their national scripts. The ccTLD marks a territory, being thus of paramount importance for defining the Internet identity of all those who reside and work in Serbia. Thanks to the particularity of the Serbian Cyrillic, in which one phoneme matches one letter, .СРБ domain addresses will undoubtedly be pronounced exactly as written, unlike numerous domains in the English alphabet. Hence, the motto of the campaign for the popularisation of the .СРБ domain use is “Link as you speak!” In the first six months, the priority right to register .СРБ domain names will be granted solely to the owners of the existing .RS domain names, at the price...

Beginning of the open registration of .срб domain names

On August 1st 2012, registrations opened with a Land Rush for the Serbian IDN .срб. From now on, everyone can register a .срб domain name, regardless of whether or not they already have an equivalent .rs domain name. Cyrillic .срб domain name is the second national Internet domain name of the Republic of Serbia, and it is used along with existing .rs domain name. Currently there are over 6,000 registered .срб domain names and over 73,000 registered .rs domain names. A majority of new registrants are brand names who seek not only to  protect their intellectual property, but also to ensure that searches uniquely lead to their sites, since search engines treat both Cyrillic and Latin results in Serbian language equally. Internet addresses in Cyrillic are particularly well‑received by the Serbian expatriates, who see them as another vehicle to preserving their cultural and national identity. Registration of .срб domain names is carried out through registrars whose list can be found at: www.rnids.rs/en/list‑of‑registrars.

RNIDS organised the DNSSEC implementation workshop

Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS) organised the DNSSEC implementation workshop on May 16th and 17th at hotel ‘Moskva’ in Belgrade with Patrik Wallström and Rickard Bellgrim from the Swedish national registry as lecturers. The workshop gathered about thirty participants who dealt with installing and maintaining DNS servers. DNS is considered to be one of the pillars the Internet is build on and thus the security and accuracy of data provided by DNS is critical for the survival of the Internet as an ordered space. DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) is a set of extensions for DNS servers increasing the security of DNS service users by cryptographically signing DNS responses using the public key so that their authenticity can be checked. Signing entire zones on DNS servers enables the confidence first among various DNS servers that exchange information and then with the end user who gets the accurate and unchanged information about the location of a particular server. Malicious activities of modifying the content of a DNS cache, which are well known, imply entering false, altered IP addresses of particular servers into the cache. If the user searches for www.some‑bank.rs, instead of the correct IP address he will get the one that the attacker...

Link as you speak!

As of January 27th website owners in Serbia and the Diaspora can register the Cyrillic domain .СРБ as well. During the first six months, only the owners of existing or newly registered .RS domain names will be eligible to register .СРБ domain names at a special price. After this period, anyone will be able to register Cyrillic domain names, regardless of whether they have a specific .RS domain name or not. Internet users should know that they need not enter "www" in front of the Cyrillic URL. That is the remnant of the original practice in writing URLs because all existing sites with Latin domain names function without "www" if servers where they are placed are properly set. The Cyrillic Internet domain .СРБ is a new, second country code Top Level Domain of the Republic of Serbia, which means that in the future it will be equally used as the existing .RS ccTLD. From a practical viewpoint, the same website will be visible at both addresses, .СРБ and .RS, if that is what its owner wants and if the server is set that way. After the Russian Cyrillic domain .РФ, our .СРБ is the second Internet domain in the Cyrillic script in the world...
