Russian domain “.рф” already one of Europe's twenty biggest

Russia is the first country allowed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to register Cyrillic domain names, with the label .рф, apart from the already existing Latin string .ru. The process of registering the Russian Cyrillic domain .рф commenced on November 11th at noon, according to the Moscow time. The interest of users to register the second Russian domain is unchanged. The commencement of the registration process attracted a large number of Internet users in Russia and over 100,000 domains were registered during the first three hours. A total of 258,000 .рф domain names were registered by the end of the first registration day. By the end of November 14th, 408,959 Cyrillic .рф domain names were registered. During this short period of three and a half days, the new Russian domain entered the list of the twenty largest European domains.

More than 100,000 users registered ".рф” during the first 3 hours of registration

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved the first non‑Latin ccTLDs on April 27th 2010. Egypt, Russia, Saudi Arabia and The United Arab Emirates (UAE) were then approved to use ccTLDs written in their own scripts. Russia became the first country provided with the possibility of registering domain names in Cyrillic, with the label “.рф”, apart from the existing Latin string “.ru”. The process of registering “.рф” domains commenced on November 11th 2010 at noon, according to Moscow time. This attracted a large number of Internet users in Russia. During the first hour of the registration, 36,607 new domains were registered, 43,054 Cyrillic domains were registered during the second hour, and 41,456 during the third hour. Before the process of registering the second national domain commenced, more than 18,000 users got the priority right for registering the Cyrillic domain ".рф” in order to protect their brands. A considerable interest of users for registering the Russian Cyrillic domain justifies the decision of ICANN to carry out IDN ccTLD Fast Track Process and enable domains to be registered in national scripts.

WHOIS service for .rs domains

RNIDS has enabled the WHOIS service, which allows you to view the database of registered .rs domains. This service is mostly used to check whether a particular .rs domain is registered or not. If the domain is registered, the WHOIS service allows you to see information on the registrant, either a legal entity or a physical person that has registered the domain. Information RNIDS publishes within its WHOIS service is defined by General Terms and Conditions for Registration of .rs Domain Names. This service can be used by all Internet users without any limitation and the information displayed is stored in the database of RNIDS. The WHOIS service does not show personal details of domain registrants (telephone number, e‑mail address, fax number, and so on) and cannot be used in order to find out certain e‑mail addresses. Detailed information on the service is available here.

Proposal “.срб” accepted as Cyrillic domain of Serbia

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) finalized the technical assessment of the proposals submitted by the Serbian National Register of Internet Domain Names (RNIDS) and accepted the label “срб” as the Cyrillic domain of Serbia. The decision of ICANN that the label “срб” fulfills requirements for the Cyrillic domain of Serbia on the Internet represents the first step in the process of approving the new domain. What needs to be done is to finalize the formal procedure and promote the Cyrillic domain “срб” as the second Internet domain of Serbia. The entire process of assigning a new domain to the authorized national register lasts between three and six months and, in accordance with the Fast Track process for approving non‑Latin domains, ICANN publishes a list of new approved domains every month. A public discussion on principles to be included in the Rulebook on registering the Cyrillic domain of Serbia on the Internet will be initiated soon. The process of registering the Cyrillic domain is expected to commence in the second half of 2011. The official announcement of RNIDS is available here.
