IDN encoder set at RNIDS Website

RNIDS has set an IDN encoder at its Website, at IDN Encoder and, thus, provided the site visitors with the possibility to see how an IDN domain name is converted to its ACE (ASCII Compatible Encoding) form. This conversion of the UNICODE domain name to its ACE form enables the Domain Name System (DNS) to recognise domain names written in a national script (for instance, in Cyrillic) and link them with corresponding Internet addresses. A detailed explanation of what happens with IDN domain names before their use by DNS is available here.

RNIDS purchased new equipment

Based on the public invitation for collecting proposals for provisioning hardware and accompanying software for its information system, the Serbian National Register of Internet Domain Names (RNIDS) enclosed a contract with Coming Computer Engineering оn the delivery and installation of equipment. The technical solution implies equipment installed at two locations, which are connected via a fast optical link. Equipment is configured so as to enable uninhibited operation of services even in case of the gravest failures. Virtual servers use VMWare software, all data is replicated from one location to the other and backup is stored on disks and tapes. Two new DNS servers for registering country code top level domains representing Serbia on the Internet have also been installed. The new equipment of RNIDS became operational on October 10th 2010.

ICANN and UNESCO jointly promote multilingualism on the Internet

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have agreed to jointly work so as to strengthen and promote multilingualism on the Internet and enable the successful introduction of internationalized country code top level domain names in languages of countries which do not use the Latin (ASCII) script. ICANN and UNESCO have signed a Letter of Intent which sets out areas of joint cooperation also defined in the Cooperation Agreement from December 2009. Both parties have agreed to cooperate, each in its field of expertise, to develop a reference table of full and abbreviated names of UNESCO’s Member States whose official languages are based on the Cyrillic script. The cooperation is also expected to spread to countries using other non‑Latin scripts. The exact scope of the project has not been determined yet, but the proposed reference table will not be binding in its use. The creation of this table may assist applicants for country code top level domains in non‑Latin scripts but the current Fast Track application process and requirements will not be altered due to this project. At the beginning of this year, the Serbian National Register of Internet Domain Names (RNIDS)...

Voting results for Cyrillic domain of Serbia

On March 5th 2010 the Serbian National Register of Internet Domain Names initiated the procedure for introducing the Cyrillic IDN ccTLD that would represent Serbia on the Internet. The procedure is defined by ICANN in The Final Implementation Plan for IDN ccTLD Fast Track Process. Proposals for the Cyrillic domain of Serbia were collected at the beginning of July in a comprehensive and serious campaign during which the Internet community of Serbia was invited to vote. The last step in the procedure was voting for one of four proposals. The voting results show that the Internet community responsibly and seriously participated in the process of selecting the Cyrillic domain of Serbia. Apart from 10,505 people who voted on the Website of RNIDS, two control groups contained approximately 1,000 voters. The aim of the control voting was to confirm results of the basic voting. The Serbian National Register of Internet Domain Names would like to thank everybody who participated in the choice of our Cyrillic domain.
