The .rs domain is a national top-level domain and the most common choice for registrants in Serbia. The .rs domain is used in business by the majority of companies operating in Serbia.

Although .rs is the most common choice for registrants, RNIDS also manages several second-level domain spaces, including .co.rs, .org.rs, .edu.rs, and .in.rs. While both legal entities and natural persons, domestic and foreign registrants, and organizations of any type and purpose can register a .rs domain, the other zones are intended for specific categories of registrants—legal entities, organizations, educational institutions, or natural persons—as detailed in the General Terms and Conditions for the Registration of National Internet Domains.

The .rs domain, a Latin-script national top-level internet domain (country code Top-Level Domain, ccTLD), is the successor of the former .YU domain.

.rs became visible on the Internet on September 25, 2007. Registration of .rs domain names began on March 10, 2008. The landrush—a term describing the limited initial period during which attractive domain names can be registered—started exactly at noon on March 10, 2008, when the registration of .yu domains was also stopped. Domain names registered under .yu were reserved in the .rs domain space for the following six months, giving their registrants enough time to exercise priority in registration.

On December 10, 2018, .rs became multilingual, i.e., an IDN (Internationalized Domain Name), as domain name registration was made possible with an extended set of Latin characters from the languages of national minorities used in Serbia.

ICANN assigned both domains to RNIDS for management, with the support of the relevant ministry of the Republic of Serbia.

RNIDS manages five domain spaces under each national domain (.rs, .co.rs, .org.rs, .edu.rs, and .in.rs, as well as .срб, .пр.срб, .орг.срб, .обр.срб, and .од.срб). Management of the .ac.rs and .ак.срб domain spaces has been delegated to the Academic Network of Serbia, while .gov.rs and .упр.срб have been delegated to the Office for Information Technologies and Electronic Administration of the Government of the Republic of Serbia.
