Multi‑stakeholder Internet governance model: Together we are stronger

When it was first created, the Internet was used by a limited circle of people in the academic community. By the end of this year, however, according to UN figures, 43.3% of the world population will be online ‑ around 3.2 billion people. With the growth in users, trust in the Internet has suffered, and with the rise of large companies trading in the personal data of their users, and abusing their trust in other ways, the need has arisen for more robust regulation. When the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) was founded 15 years ago, national governments took a close interest in Internet governance. In the meantime, companies, associations and organisations have also become involved in this area, as well as civil society. The Internet, in a way, began to regulate itself, said Vladimir Radunović, director of the cyber‑security and e‑diplomacy programme at the DiploFoundation, at a public debate today called  “More players, more interests, more Internet!”, organised by the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS). “There are numerous stakeholders involved in governing the Internet today: the private companies that build the networks and develop the software, the national governments that pass the laws regulating the Internet and the billions of...

Registration of .RS and .СРБ domains without a JMBG

As of 19th October it is now possible to register .RS and .СРБ domains without giving the JMBG (citizen’s ID number) of the registrant (domain user), or the administrative or technical contact, which was previously compulsory. This is the result of changes to the general terms and conditions for the registration of national Internet domain names, approved at the session of the Conference of Co‑founders of the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS) held 19th September. Existing JMBGs will remain in the database but users will be able to remove them. Users who want to can still give their JMBG along with the other domain registration data, which might be helpful in establishing their identity if, for example, they want to transfer ownership of the domain to someone else. This change to the registration rules was made at the initiative of and in cooperatino with the  Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection, who published his own  press release (Serbian only) in connection with this decision. RNIDS takes particular care to protect personal data and, accordingly, steps were taken to review the files in the Central Data File Register maintained by the Commissioner in accordance with the Law on...

In the first block, titled Security of mobile networks and applications, the participants looked at the issues surrounding software security and application privacy from a variety of points of view. “Unfortunately, early research suggests that probably most applications in use today do not take nearly enough care over the security and privacy of their users. Big Data and Cyber Security event

The Faculty of Security Studies was the venue on 25th September for an open lecture titled Big Data and Cyber‑Security. The Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS) and the US Embassy organised the talk in partnership with the Faculty of Security Studies, the ETF (Faculty of Electrical Engineering) Students’ Union and the PMF (Faculty of Sciences) Students’ Union. Around 40 students, IT professionals and interested members of the public had a chance to hear about the concept of Big Data and learn about its importance for both the private and public sector and how it can help combat modern cyber threats. Big Data is a term used to indicate large quantities of unprocessed and unstructured digital data derived from different sources, which cannot be analysed using traditional techniques and tools. In order to utilise, store and manage it, modern, specialised software is needed. This was the topic of the talk by Branko Primetica, eGlobalTech Vice President who emphasized that the three main characteristics of large collections of data are: volume, velocity and their variety. With the rapid development of the Internet of Things, which allows the interconnection of things, i.e. physical objects, via the Internet, the Big Data concept has taken on special...

New RNIDS website

The Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS) has launched the third version of its site as it keeps its Internet presence in step with trends and with the best practices of national Internet registries. At prod.rnids.beeloc.rs and прод.рнидс.итцентар.срб visitors can access 30% more content than before, with a clearer structure and new mobile‑friendly site design. The new site means that Internet users in Serbia can access a range of information on Internet domains not available elsewhere, more quickly and more easily. Detailed searching of the RNIDS document repository is now possible, categorised by the RNIDS body that issued the document, by its topic and by the content of the PDF file itself. Different versions of the same document can also be browsed. The new content on the site includes, in particular, a section on Internet governance, which gives an overview of the major organisations involved, in Serbia and internationally. This is the first time a comprehensive overview has been given of...

I Know You From the Net ‑ promotional and educational campaign

As in previous years, this autumn the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS) is launching its traditional promotional and educational campaign for Internet users in Serbia. The topic of this year's campaign, titled "Znamo se sa Neta" (I Know You From the Net), is business and personal cyber‑identity, aimed at sole traders and individuals who need to publicise their work or themselves on the Internet. The campaign has been inspired by the needs of the modern entrepreneur in Serbia, the small business owner registered as a sole trader, who is regarded in law and by the business environment as a “private individual with a rubber stamp”, that is, an individual for whom business and life, company and family, official and private are constantly interwoven. The sole trader is in a constant state of identity limbo, with a very fine, sometimes non‑existent line between his or her business identity as a company and his or her personal identity as a citizen, in terms of ownership, and before the law. Today, when cyber‑identity via a presence on the Internet is also of great importance, he needs to manage his profile in the virtual world both as a businessman and as an individual. This is why...

The US government is committed to the multi‑stakeholder model for the administration of critical Internet resources, which it demonstrated back in 1998 when it supported the idea of the creation of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). This non‑profit organisation, based in California, manages the global DNS system, and takes its decisions through a process that involves dialogue amongst a large number of different stakeholders around the world who include national and generic domain name registries, Internet and hosting providers,...
