This year, Serbia is for the second time part of "European Cyber Security Month", organised by ENISA, the European Union Agency for Network and Information Security. On 29th October, between 10.30 am and 2 pm, the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS) is organising a panel debate called "Internet security 3 in 1" in the Belgrade Museum of Science and Technology at Skenderbegova 51. "European Cyber Security Month" (ECSM) aims to promote cyber security amongst the public in order to change attitudes towards cyber threats and provide the latest information through education and exchange of good practice. Participants at the "Internet Security 3 in 1" panel debate will try to answer some key questions: what are the main Internet security threats today for ordinary and business users? How should they protect themselves? What are state institutions doing and what is expected of them? Our everyday life is increasingly dependent on data security and the accessibility of Internet services. But do we think about security? Who is processing our data, where are they keeping it, how are they protecting it, what are the main dangers that lurk online and what responsibility do private companies and the state have? If the institutions are not providing us with...

Tesla's Vision of the Internet

On July 10th, Serbia marks the Science Day, a national event dedicated to the great Serbian scientist Nikola Tesla and to science in general. This year, the event has commenced the day before with the opening of the exhibition entitled "Tesla's Vision of the Internet" by Lazar Boskovic, organized by the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry and the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade, staged in Belgrade’s gallery "Ozone". The exhibition presents Tesla’s work "World System" from the year 1900, when he presented a 12‑point vision of what is today called the wireless internet, mobile telephony and GPS. In a 1909 statement for the New York Times, quoted by Popular Mechanics magazine in an article titled "Wireless of the future", Nikola Tesla said this, among other things: "It will soon be possible, for instance, for a business man in New York to dictate instructions and have them appear instantly in type in London or elsewhere. He will be able to call up from his desk and talk with any telephone subscriber in the world. It will only be necessary to carry an inexpensive instrument not bigger than a watch, which will enable its bearer to hear anywhere on sea or land for distances of...

Panel Debate: “Lords of the Internet ‑ a Change in Governance” Held

On 10th April, the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS), together with the Centre for the Promotion of Science, organized a panel debate themed, “Lords of the Internet ‑ a Change in Governance”.  The event was occasioned by the decision by the US Commerce Department in March of this year to initiate a key phase in globalising the Internet governance, whereby it would cease to be controlled by the US. To mark this, ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has launched a global consultation process on what form the new “multistakeholder” system of Internet governance should take. The aim of the debate, held at the Centre for the Promotion of Science, was to inform the public and to spur the Serbian Internet community into getting involved in this global process of consultations. Issues of privacy, recent global affairs and possible directions for the future development of the Internet were some of the questions that especially interested participants. Who governs and who supervises? ‘The “multistakeholder” model is the most complicated system of stewardship ever devised by man,’ said Danko Jevtović, director of RNIDS. So why is the USA insisting on just this model as the basis for the new approach to managing the global...

“Cyrillic and the Internet, in Serbia and around the world” panel debate

On the second anniversary of the .СРБ internet domain, on 27th January 2014, the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS), organised a panel debate called “Cyrillic and the Internet, in Serbia and around the world”  at the Belgrade Centre for the Promotion of Science. It is easy to forget in Serbia that the issue of Cyrillic in digital technologies is not just a problem here but one faced by many other countries that use Cyrillic as an official script. Similar problems are also being encountered by other ethnic groups and countries where scripts other than the English alphabet are in use. Participating in the discussion ‑ which was moderated by Tamara Vučenović, journalist and editor of the Digitalne Ikone radio program  ‑ were representatives of the academic and professional communities both at home and abroad. First off, Dr Biljana Dojčinović, lecturer at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, presented the Knjiženstvo project, which is dedicated to the theory and history of women’s literature in the Serbian language up to 1915. Dr Žarko Mijajlović, full professor of the Belgrade Faculty of Mathematics talked about the work of the National Centre for Digitisalization and its projects such as the Virtual Library and the Digital Catalogue of Monuments of Culture...
