RNIDS ‑ Annual Report for 2012

RNIDS is continuing with good practice of European national registers who publish their regular annual publications for the purpose of informing the public about their activities. "RNIDS ‑ Annual Report for 2012" is a 24‑page publication which includes a review of everything that is related to the work of the Serbian registry of Internet domain names. The contents of the publication include texts on national Internet domain names, accredited registrars, bodies of RNIDS and activities of all the sectors of the RNIDS Office. Particular attention was paid to statistics on registration of .RS and .СРБ national domain names, comparison with national registers in the region, and to statistics on media coverage that accompanied the activities of RNIDS. The Annual Report also contains information and illustrations related to all the significant events organized by RNIDS in 2012, such as the Serbian Internet Domain Names Day, the 4PI competition, project titled "Tesla’s Vision of Internet" and numerous promotional events that marked the beginning of operation of the .СРБ domain. Election session of the Conference of Co‑founders

On February 23rd 2013, an Election Session of the Conference of Co‑founders was held at the „Holiday Inn“ hotel, where new Management of RNIDS was elected for the three‑year term. Out of 61 co‑founders of RNIDS, a total of 51 had their authorized representatives at the session of the Conference of Co‑founders on which new members of the RNIDS Board of Governors were elected: Staniša Josić, Vladimir Aleksić, Dušan Stojičević, Zoran Perović, Aleksandar Pavlović, Snežana Božić and Biljana Romić Punoš.

The fourth annual conference DIDS 2013

The fourth annual conference DIDS 2013, dedicated to the development of Internet in the world and in national .RS and .СРБ domain spaces, was held on April 18th in Belgrade's hotel „Moskva“. This year's Serbian Internet Domain Names Day, organised by the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS), was attended by more than 120 guests, as well as 44 journalists. With 16 participants, four moderators and about 15 VIP guests, the capacities were completely full. As always, the Program of DIDS was divided into three sections and proceeded in the form of presentations, lectures and panel discussions. DIDS 2013 was open to all the guests free of charge; however, since this event is intended primarily for the users of national Internet domains, only those who possessed е‑mail addresses ending with .RS or .СРБ were able to register and attend the conference. In cooperation with its media sponsors, RNIDS provided a live video streaming of the conference on seven Internet locations (including the websites of the national televisions RTS and B‑92 and newspaper Blic). RNIDS will host Representatives of European national registries

Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS) will welcome the representatives of the Council of European National Top‑Level Domain Registries (CENTR) on 14th and 15th February, in Belgrade hotel "Moscow". This association brings together institutions that govern national Internet domain, primarily from Europe, but among the members (51 full, 10 associate and 12 organizations with observer status) are registries of Canada, Iran, Japan, China, Mexico, New Zealand, Uruguay and Hong Kong. RNIDS will host the 3rd CENTR Security workshop, the first meeting of European national registries dedicated to ISO27001 standard. That marks the beginning of the process of preparing for its introduction and implementation at the participating institutions. Standard applies to system security and protection of information and is of high importance in the management of ICT resources. DDoS attack on .rs

In the night between Sunday and Monday our primary DNS servers receive strikingly more queries than normal that indicated that our DNS servers were subject to amplified DDoS attacks. Yesterday afternoon attack was intensified, and our network were congested and at moments were not able to transfer the traffic. Past evening we have reconfigured our network and routing, and added blocking devices in front of the systems in order to reduce load and return system to fully operational state. The attack is still going on and we are closely monitoring the situation.

The first anniversary of the Cyrillic .СРБ domain

The registration of Cyrillic Internet .СРБ domain names started on January 27th 2012, resulting in more than 6,800 domain names of this type that have been registered in the course of one year. Since there are currently over 77,000 .RS domain names, the above number shows that the .СРБ domain managed to reach almost 10% of what its "older brother" had achieved. Considering the insufficient use of the Cyrillic alphabet in our society, this represents quite a satisfactory result. The decision of the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS) to introduce a Cyrillic national Internet domain actually represented a realization of the constitutional right of the citizens of Serbia to use the official alphabet for their Internet domain names. Showing due respect to their national alphabets, 23 countries have already reached the same decision; all the largest countries in the world that do not use the Latin alphabet happen to be among them (Russia, China and India), as well as many Arab and Asian ones. As some of these countries officially use several languages and alphabets, there are currently 33 domains with internationalized names (Internationalized Domain Name ‑ IDN), i.e. domain names written using other than the English alphabet. The RNIDS Board of Governors appointed Aleksandar Popovic as the Acting Director until the termination of ongoing procedure for the election of a new director. Aleksandar Popovic is the Chief Financial Officer and will continue to perform this duty.

Тhe official statement from NiNet Company given on 05 December

Today, December 5th 2012. in the early hours of the morning, our main web site ninet.rs came under hacker attack. We identified group of Pakistani hackers responsible for this activities. The hacker group has demanded known names in the RS domain space, such as Google, Microsoft, etc.. Since Ninet Company is one of the leading registrars with the largest number of foreign resellers in the first place, therefore is constantly exposed to various kinds of attacks. Our system administrators immediately reacted and prevented further penetration into the system, all unauthorized DNS records changes are restored by the timely intervention of domain names administrators . We have temporarily shut down our site, and we are doing security checks. Our servers are working on cPanel platform and cPanel has reported security bug and released 3 security fix yesterday (http://cpanel.net/news/). After applying this fixes we are continuing to check our systems. Because of this, the last in the series of attacks, we are forced to introduce the most rigorous security measures, primarily for .rs domain resellers, e.g. access to the domain panel exclusively via VPN, second factor authentication, source IP restriction, and others. No other parts of the DNS infrastructure, beneficiary or any other data are not affected...

Portion of RNIDS DNS database managed by the registrar „NINET Company d.o.o.“ hacked

Last night between 22:52 and 23:39 occurred an unauthorized change to 106 NS records managed by the RNIDS registrar „NINET Company d.o.o.“ DNS records of other registrars were never in danger of being compromised, due to the way RNIDS security system was designed. Immediately after discovering the irregularity, access to „NINET Company d.o.o.“ to the DNS records was blocked. The restoration of the correct NS records is ongoing. Using security flaws in the „NINET Company d.o.o.“ online registration system, but primarily due to the fact that „NINET Company d.o.o.“ has allowed, against RNIDS policy, for the third parties to have access to security certificates needed to access DNS records, hackers replaced NS records of many major international brands whose domain names are managed by „NINET Company d.o.o.“.

Apart from the surroundings in which we truly live and work, in the course of the past few years we have also been provided with our virtual versions of living and working environment. If we view the Internet as a large virtual city, a multitude of pieces of «immovable» real‑estate ‑ that, in reality, happens to be quite «movable» indeed ‑ the analogy with the real‑life homeless, subtenants and landlords becomes quite appropriate. In today’s age, individuals or companies not present on the Internet can truly be called the Internet‑homeless. No one knows their Internet address because they simply don't have one! They don't even have their own personal or business profiles on one of the social networks, nor do they use any of the free e‑mail services that would at least enable others to find them on the Web and establish some form of communication. You can run into the Internet‑homeless ‑ people or companies that exist only in the offline world ‑ only by chance or under serendipitous circumstances, should your paths happen to cross. RNIDS helps best Internet popularization projects

Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS) will allocate non‑refundable assets to projects complying with the general aims and activities of the Foundation. The objectives of 2012 Programme of support to Internet popularization projects are to increase the useful Internet content in the Serbian language and script, in the national Internet address space (.срб and .rs domain names) and to increase the number of registered national internet domain names. All legal entities or entrepreneurs registered before September 1st 2011 in the Republic of Serbia can apply for using non‑refundable assets from the Programme.. RNIDS and Netnod together enhance services of Domain Names for Serbia

Belgrade/Stockholm, August 6th 2012 Serbian TLD operator RNIDS and the Swedish‑based Internet infrastructure organisation Netnod have entered into a strategic partnership to further strengthen the Name Service for the TLDs that RNIDS operates, including .rs and .срб. By making use of Netnod’s extensive worldwide infrastructure RNID’s operation of the domain name system will be additionally secured. The foothold will minimise potential risks for the zones operated by RNIDS by using Netnod’s 40+ locations worldwide, allowing for example for rapid response in the case of a malicious intent.
